IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international certification that assesses English language proficiency, evaluating productive and receptive skills in a balanced way. It is required for admission to universities, educational institutions, and employment opportunities in contexts where English is the official or academic language of communication.
IELTS is a test of proven validity, developed by three of the most authoritative international language institutions: the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge English Language Assessment.
There are different versions of the IELTS test available, each designed for specific purposes:
- IELTS Academic Suitable for those who intend to enroll in university or academic programs.
- IELTS General Training Designed for entry into the workplace or for migration purposes.
- IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Required for specific visa categories for the United Kingdom.
With over 2.5 million candidates each year, IELTS is the most widely taken English language test in the world.
The IELTS test evaluates language proficiency on a 9-band scale (from 1 to 9), which can be mapped to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 to C2.
Every candidate always receives an official certificate, regardless of the score achieved, with no pass or fail result.
The IELTS certification is recognized by over 12,000 organizations in more than 140 countries, including:
- universities and academic institutions
- government agencies
- companies and international organizations
This makes IELTS one of the most widely accepted English certifications globally.
